Oral Health and Pregnancy

17 / 06 / 2019

We have had some great news at Crook Log Dental Practice.

Our lovely practice manager Nusa at Bexleyheath, is expecting her second child! We wish Nusa and her family our warmest congratulations!

Pregnancy is a very exciting time, but between all the pregnancy appointments you might find that your dental health care, is pushed to the side.

More common when there’s a ‘bun in the oven’

All that progesterone and oestrogen swimming around your body can cause gums to soften and bleed, leaving you more prone to gum disease, sensitivity and other tooth problems.

Pregnancy causes an increase in blood flow by 30-50%, giving women those healthy rosy cheeks, but on the down side the increased blood flow to your gums can cause gum problems.

  • Book for a dental check-up appointment:Your dentist at Bexleyheath, can monitor the overall health of your mouth and give any necessary treatment or advice.
  • Brushing twice a day for two minutes: It is more important than ever to brush and floss your teeth effectively during your pregnancy.Brush regularly and thoroughly after meals or sugary snacks, at least twice a day.
  • Smoking – If you are a smoker it is advised to stop, as smoking harms your unborn baby and can also make gum disease worse.
  • Pregnancy sickness: If you suffer from morning sickness, we recommend that you do not brush your teeth immediately after vomiting! The acid from your vomit can soften the enamel of your teeth and by brushing can cause further damage. Instead, it is best to rinse your mouth with water to prevent further erosion.
  • Diet: Try to replace sugary snacks with healthier ones, such as carrots, oat cakes, and celery. Cheese and yogurt in particular are good snacks because a growing foetus needs a lot of calcium.

Please contact us at Crook Log Dental Practice for your dental check-up on 0208 303 3838 or book online www.crooklogdentalpractice.co.uk/book-an-appointment/.
