We believe that dentistry doesn’t stop when you leave our practice. Hygienists are specially trained in preventing and treating gum disease – most of which is done at home.

Why do I need a dental hygienist appointment?

Gum disease is the most significant single cause of tooth loss in adults. It is a problem that we take very seriously at our Dental Practice. As part of your check-up, we perform a B.P.E. (Basic Periodontal Examination). If your B.P.E. indicates potential gum disease or periodontal disease, we’ll refer you to our hygienist.

Hygienists are specially trained and provide dental services aimed at preventing and treating acute and chronic gum disease.

What is gum disease?

The phrase “gum disease” refers to a group of health disorders that affect the gums and tissues that support the teeth. Gingivitis and periodontitis are two of the most frequent gum diseases. Crook Log Dental has an experienced team who can guide you through your treatment through a wide range of techniques and advanced treatments.

How do I prevent gum disease?

A proper dental hygiene practice, which includes cleaning between the teeth and attending frequent check-ups, is required to keep gum disease at bay.

Your dental team will ask you some questions about your lifestyle, and the dentist will examine your gums for indications of gum disease as part of your check-up. Gum disease can be treated by a dentist or dental hygienist in its early stages. The following variables can also contribute to gum disease:

  • Smoking
  • Drinking high sugar / carbonated drinks
  • Diabetes
  • Undergoing cancer treatments
  • Crowded teeth
  • A weakened immune system
  • Medication side effects

What happens at my dental hygiene appointment?

If treatment is required, your dentist/hygienist will clean your teeth. They will gently polish any persistent stains and remove any calculus (hard build-up that cannot be eliminated by brushing alone). Following an in-depth explanation on how to maintain your gums healthy, your dentist or hygienist will revisit this with you regularly until you have recovered clinical gum health and a healthy smile.
