A specialist endodontist is a dentist who focuses exclusively on saving teeth through root canal treatment and related procedures. After completing dental school, endodontists undertake three or more additional years of advanced postgraduate training in endodontics.
This specialist education equips endodontists with advanced skills in diagnosing and managing complex oral and facial pain, treating traumatic dental injuries, identifying cracked teeth, and performing procedures designed to preserve natural teeth.
By limiting their practice solely to endodontic care, endodontists gain extensive experience in both routine and highly complex cases, including root canal treatment, root canal retreatment, and endodontic microsurgery.
Endodontists utilise the most advanced technology available in the field, allowing for greater precision, efficiency, and predictability of outcomes. This often results in a more comfortable patient experience and faster healing.
During treatment, endodontists may use:
🦷 Dental 3D imaging – Endodontists sometimes require cone beam computed technology (CBCT) to provide highly detailed, in-depth images of the tooth structure and its surroundings, revealing minute details that can’t be seen with traditional X-ray technology. Using CBCT supports better diagnoses of underlying pain and other tooth symptoms, helping to identify the optimal approach to treatment.
🦷 Dental surgical microscope – Endodontics focuses on the internal structures of teeth, tiny areas that can be extremely difficult to fully examine with the naked eye. Dental surgical microscopes allow the endodontist to visualise the internal structure of teeth in extreme detail, with magnifications of x 25!
🦷 Electronic apex locator – The apex is the very end of the tooth root, and determining where it’s located plays a critical role in making sure your root canal procedure is performed with the highest accuracy and precision. This tool helps determine the total length of the canal, ensuring the entire canal is cleaned, treated, and filled, resulting in less chance of reinfection and further retreatment
🦷 Endodontic ultrasonic – Ultrasonic dental instruments use the power of high-frequency energy to provide extra, in-depth care for long-term benefits and the best possible results. An ultrasonic gently and thoroughly removes decay and debris, including old filling materials whilst efficiently disinfecting the canals.
