Dental Nursing: A Rewarding Career Behind Every Smile
When people think about working in dentistry, the first role that usually comes to mind is the dentist. But dental care is very much a team effort, and one of the most essential roles within that team is the dental nurse.  We could not function at Crook Log Dental Practice, Bexleyheath, without our wonderful team of Dental Nurses  supporting every aspect of practice life.
If you’ve ever sat in our dental chairs, you’ve likely seen our dental nurses in action — calm, organised, and always one step ahead.
But what does a dental nurse actually do? And what makes it such a fulfilling career? Whether you’re considering it for yourself or simply curious, here’s a closer look.
What is a dental nurse?
A dental nurse supports dentists and other members of our dental team in delivering safe and effective routine or cosmetic dentistry. They work closely with patients and play a vital role in making sure everything runs smoothly during appointments.
Some of their day-to-day responsibilities include preparing the surgery, sterilising instruments, recording patient notes, mixing dental materials, and assisting during procedures. Remember how we said we couldn’t function without them? – this is why!
They are professional ‘hand-holders’. You’ll find dental nurses offering reassurance to nervous patients and ensuring infection control protocols are followed to the letter. In short, they help create a calm, safe environment for both our amazing patients and clinicians.
Not just an assistant
It’s easy to assume a dental nurse is just there to pass instruments, but the reality is much broader. Good dental nursing is about anticipation — knowing what’s needed before it’s asked for. It requires focus, communication, and strong clinical knowledge.
Dental nurses also need to understand a range of procedures, from routine check-ups to more complex restorative dentistry, like root canals or surgical extractions. Here at our multi-disciplinary Bexleyheath based practice, they also assist with specialist dentistry such as orthodontics and implants. Many of our Nurses go on to develop skills in radiography, oral health education or sedation support, often gaining post-qualification certificates. They are a fiercely driven and committed team here at Crook Log Dental Practice!
Qualifications and registration
To work as a dental nurse in the UK, you must be registered with the General Dental Council (GDC). This means completing a recognised qualification, such as the NEBDN National Diploma in Dental Nursing or a Level 3 apprenticeship, followed by registration with the GDC. The NEBDN details all courses leading to registration and beyond, find out more here https://www.nebdn.org/
Training usually combines classroom learning with hands-on experience in a dental practice. It’s a demanding course, but one that builds solid knowledge and practical skills. And because dental nurses are regulated professionals, they must also complete continuing professional development (CPD) to maintain their registration and stay up to date.
We currently have a great mix of qualified nurses and those who are just starting out on this rewarding career.
Who would enjoy this role?
Dental nursing might be a great fit if you enjoy working with people, can stay calm under pressure, and like being part of a team. It suits those who prefer practical, hands-on work, and who find satisfaction in helping others.
The role can be both fast-paced and physically demanding. You’ll be on your feet for much of the day, and you’ll need to maintain focus during procedures that may last longer than expected. But for many, the variety and sense of purpose make it more than worthwhile.
